Have you guys ever heard of HiFly tires? I was negotiating price with the guy at Town Fair Tire and he said for what I want to spend they would work. I wanna make sure they aren;t going to explode on me or leave me upsidedown in a ditch.

never heard of them, but don't be afraid to research them.

I just rode through 2 terrible metro Detroit winters on RADAR tires.

yeah

Radar

That's a tire brand (new tires tomorrow thank god)

i havnt been able to find much of anything on them. the first time I tried all I could find was a press release saying they were expanding their size offerings.

Don't buy Chinese tires (I am assuming that's what these are), it isn't worth it.

Shandong Hengfeng Rubber & Plastic Co., Ltd

What's on the car now? All-seasons? If so, I'd run all seasons vs. low end Chinese winter tires.

JMO.

From what I've heard from others, and from what Consumer Reports has said, cheap Chinese-brand tires are cheap, terrible, and probably unsafe (relatively speaking): http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2014/…

My experience with Chinese tires is that it's a total crapshoot. Even within the same brand/model you can get differing wear and performance. There were two guys here at work who both got Sunny (I think that was the brand) tires on their Accords. One guy's chugged along and were fine whereas the other had two that were wearing significantly and having blocks of tread chunk out. After alignment (which was in BTW), rotation, and balance it continued even with the tires in different positions. When we looked at the tire date it turned out the two that were bad were manufactured ~26 weeks after the other 6. So one guy got a good set of el-cheapo tires that lasted him for years and the other got headaches and with the additional work that was put in during investigating probably could have just picked up a more consistent brand.

Consumer Reports did an article about Chinese tires a few weeks ago:

I'm not saying that you must not buy those tires, just be aware of what you will be getting. If you can afford to pay a little more, it's probably well worth it.

I'm a big fan of TireRack's least expensive winter tire for most applications - the General Altimax Arctic. I've got quite a few customers with them installed and they are all very very happy with them, even after a few seasons. People are getting good mileage and great traction from them, and they aren't even loud on the highway!

Yeah, you need proper winter tires then. These seem a bit dicey though.

What size do you need?

I'm getting General AltiMAX RT43's put on for full year usage tomorrow morning.

Their Arctic winter tire is only 78$ a tire in my car's size through tire rack.

Might be worth looking into I hear they are good as well

Firestone winterforce actually come in cheaper for me. once i get the shipping charge its over 700 and I can;t get there to pick the, up myself (long drive and I would have to take a vacvation day)

Kinja'd!!! deekster_caddy > OPPOsaurus WRX

Yup shipping is a bastard on those. Usually TireRack is cheaper than DiscountTire even with their "Free shipping" in the end because Tirerack throws in things like lugnuts and centering rings if you are buying rims. I'm just saying the Generals are a good tire if you can find them locally. I'm not a fan of brands that go much cheaper than that.

Firestone winterforce is an excellent tire too. I've got them on my Volt and it's unstoppable in the snow. Well any snow tire is unstoppable in the snow. Except those cheap chinese-made pieces of crap. I would avoid them if at all possible.

ooo

if you're tight on cash, why get a second set of wheels? just have the tires swapped

theres not a huge savings cuz i'm downsizing the wheel. I can them do they swap over in my driveway instead of having some1 else do it.

hmm thats true.

what year is the WRX again?

Is it worth buying wheels from somewhere random and the tires online?

Maybe one of the tirebuyer installers will sell you some wheels or maybe a local used shop?
